We invite Bedford residents and business owners to help build a special community park, the Bedford Village Common,   located in the historic center of Bedford – just east of the intersection of Route 101 and Bell Hill Road.  The natural setting of this park, representative of a true New England town common, is viewed by many as an important element in defining Bedford in its most traditional sense.

While Phase I, including completed environmental and engineering design services, permitting, signage, fencing, land clearing, and a parking lot, was financed through appropriations of the Bedford town budget, construction of the remaining phases will depend on a private/public partnership.  It will be necessary to raise at least $385,000 to complete the park.

Our immediate goal is to raise $105,000 in private donations to complete Phase II of the Common by fall of 2010.  This phase will include the construction of a traditional bandstand, pathways, and wetland crossings in the western section of the park.    In addition to the $105,000 raised, $60,000 will be contributed from the town’s Park’s and Recreation Impact Fees.  With the completion of Phase II, the Common will be usable for the public to enjoy.

The final two phases of the western section of the Village Common will require additional funds of $218,000.  Included in Phases III and IV will be a natural skating pond and a warming hut (based on the design of the old Bedford train depot), and numerous amenities including, birdhouses, arbors, benches, gardens, landscaping, and more.

We believe that the future of Bedford lies in our continuing ability to make Bedford a desirable and attractive place in which to live and work.  A public green space, the Bedford Village Common, will help to maintain the high quality of life that attracts so many to our town.

Please join us in supporting the Bedford Village Common with your generous donation.  Your contribution is tax-deductible. The Bedford Village Common Development Committee (BVCDC) is a Town Council-appointed committee that is charged with raising private funds and overseeing the development and construction of the Common.
