The primary role of the Planning & Zoning Department is to build consensus among Bedford citizens and businesses on the future direction of our community and to incorporate these guidelines into planning documents for use by the land use boards and commissions of the town. The Master Plan is updated once every ten years through an extensive input at community meetings. The Zoning Ordinance and the Land Development Control Regulations are periodically revised to implement the goals outlined in the Master Plan. The staff strives to balance the rights of
individual property owners with the public interest to insure livable neighborhoods, a range of shopping and cultural opportunities, ample public facilities and a healthy economic base.
Some functions of the Planning and Zoning Department include:
- Review of all residential and commercial development proposals,
- Staff support to the Planning Board, Zoning Board of adjustment, and conservation commission,
- Crafting revisions to town ordinances and regulations for approval by the planning board and/or Town Ballot Vote,
- Investigation and Prosecution of Zoning complaints
